Welcome to our heifer sale to celebrate the 50th anniversary of our Kilbride Farm Simmental herd. The herd was established in 1971 by the importation of four heifers from Germany, followed by six the next year also from Germany. After this only a small handful of specially selected females were purchased over the fifty years. The most significant of these was Carn Eunice, bought from Jim McCarrroll in Donegal. This heifer is the matriarch of one of the best known and prolific families in the breed. To date around four hundred Eunices have been registered in the herd.
After using A I in the early years it was decided that if we were to establish a herd of similar types, we would have to introduce stock bulls. This has been our policy over the years, and we have bought bulls that we thought would contribute to our plan, regardless of cost and wherever they were available.
In the early years we had much success in the show ring including the first ever Simmental Interbreed Champion at the RUAS and the Male and Reserve Champion at The Royal Show. However, a decision was taken in 2000 to cease showing as it was not making any contribution to our business, also our customers were demanding higher health standards and we thought this could be most easily achieved by not taking stock out and bringing them home again. Our policy of concentrating on bull sales has been very successful, we are very proud to have produced seven Supreme Champions at the Perth and Stirling Sales, with many high prices up to 22,000 guineas.
It is always satisfying to see bulls we have bred doing well in other herds and with A I Companies. Semen and embryos have been exported to many parts of the world; the Kilbride Farm prefix is recognised in most countries where Simmentals are bred.
We have participated in performance recording schemes since these were first available in the early years, and these play an important role in our stock selection. We also began introducing the polling gene into the herd thirty years ago, and about half the females are now polled.
The history and progress of the herd, gleaned from our scrapbooks and Billy’s memoirs, can be viewed in a series of videos on the Kilbride Farm YouTube and Facebook sites.
We decided to celebrate our Golden Jubilee with the breed by offering this select group of heifers from across the cow families in the herd for sale. Normally all these would have been retained. They have been prepared naturally with no washing or grooming to give potential purchasers confidence in what they see.
All photographs and videos have been taken in the field by ourselves.
